The file so-called torrent file contains a partial file called the "info hash" or "torrent info", which is encrypted and initially tells the tracker where the client is in relation to the rest of the file. clients do this automatically and bittorrent clients are designed to automatically update if a torrent changes size. the torrent file is split into pieces and passes the pieces back and forth between the clients involved in the file sharing. it contains everything the tracker needs to know about you and your computer. The torrent file itself is the main component.
The name became attached to the term "bittorrent", which had formerly been used to describe a method of telecommunication data transfer which could be used to carry large files such as movies or computer games over the internet.
